Collaborative Mural with Thomastown Mens Shed

Marshes Street, Thomastown, Kilkenny

2021

The purpose of this project was to collaboratively create a mural in this area which has been left dilapidated and disregarded, with an aim to improve it visually and assist in the regeneration of this space.

In addition to this, this project aimed to foster creative community engagement by involving integral community members in the creation of a public art piece. Also central to the project was encouraging and promoting discussions about individual and community values, reciprocity, and what it means to be a part of a community.

The processes involved in this project were value based workshops, design discussions, and collaborative teamwork. The themes that inspire this project are civic engagement with our environment, community development and engagement, exploration of values, and co-creation of our shared spaces.

The mural depicts Mullins’ Bridge which is central to the identity of Thomastown. Also depicted is a single continuous line drawing showing interests and activities the Mens Shed are involved in eg: planting and nature, boat building and kindling production, and men speaking side by side.
